In fact, they are not crippled: if you take our own samples
in the examples/ directory, they contain images and include
them in formatting. Either there is something wrong with
your way to specify images, or you have come across
a rare bug in image support. If you can send me
off-list (to grig@renderx.com) a minimal sample
FO file + related images, I'll try to investigate further.
