Unfortunately, this would be applicable only to _completely
independent_ documents. Merging occurs on a very late step
of processing: it just concatenates pages. No link, no
page-number-citation may ever leap across document
boundary. So it is not a method of building big documents;
rather, it is a technique to collect a huge batch of small ones.
