Hello Mavis,
Could it be that your text contains some characters outside of
ISO-8859-1 encoding? In this case you should use special codelist that
specifies mapping from 8-bit encoding used by TeX pattern file to Unicode.
Please refer to section 6. "Configuring Hyphenation Patterns" of "XEP
User Guide" (userguide.pdf).
