[xep-support] Failed to load eps external-graphic

I am getting the error below when rendering a document containing an EPS image via <fo:external-graphic>. This is a valid EPS file. Is this not a supported graphic format?

        [error] Failed to create image file:/D:/buzz/scott/TEST.EPS of type null

        [error] java.lang.NullPointerException
