It would be nice, yes.
A work-around is to use something like Ghostscript to convert the EPS
files
into PDF files and reference those in your document (or FO).
Do a google search for "epstopdf" to find a program to help in this
task. It uses ghostscript but does some prep work on the data to
create a "tighter" PDF.
