A necessary correction:
never for multi-bytes (TrueType and OpenType) fonts.
XEP inserts actual space characters for one-byte (Type1) fonts (+ Tw,
if needed).
But Acrobat correctly handles the absolute positioning of English text
for both one-byte and multi-bytes fonts.
