I'm assuming you are expecting the symbols to come from the Times font
but do you know whether the symbols actually exist within the font?
Even unicode fonts don't have the entire 65k symbols in them and it is
pretty standard to display an open vertical rectangle when a symbol
doesn't exist. A solution to this would be to find a font that does
have the symbol and switch to that font before trying to display the
needed symbols. With some fonts (such as non-unicode mathematical
fonts), the symbols replace normal characters so you may need to check
which character you need to ask RenderX to display to achieve the
desired result.
