Hi Darren,
I would look into imageMagick if I were you ... ghostscript does an excellent job as well, but the default configuration is "very" lossy and needs a lot of adjusting - my experience, YMMV.
Regards,
HP

Darren:
You are correct, the answer is no.
RenderX is a composition engine, interested in fonts, kerning, line endings and laying out pages in a “page description language” (PDF, Postscript, AFP, PPML, …).
You are asking for a RIP … something that takes the composed information output from a product like RenderX and “RIPs” it to a bitmap.
Short answer … Use Ghostscript.
Output RenderX -> PDF or Postscript and the send PDF/PS to Ghostscript to get a bitmap.

I think the answer is no, but just in case I’ve missed it somewhere: Does XEP provide a method to produce output as an image, such as PNG?
So the process would be XSL:FO -> XEP -> PNG for example.
