I think you may have had something wrong in your setup. I would test again.
Are you actually getting that expiration notice in the log?
The key you sent works for my installation and has no expiration.

Subject: [xep-support] license expired?
Hi,
I'm a DocBook consultant, and in the past you have generously provided me with a license for XEP which I have used to support many of my clients that use XEP. Now it seems my XEP license has expired. When I downloaded XEP 4.24 and copied over my old license.xml file, it no longer seems to work. Can I get a new license? Thanks.
I have attached the old license file.
